Salzburg Buddhist Association

The Buddhistische Gemeinschaft Salzburg has been active in Salzburg city and province since 1977, when it registered under Austrian law as the first Buddhist association outside Vienna. It is transtraditional, consisting of one Theravada group, one Jodo Shinshu group, one Zen group in the Japanese tradition and one in the Vietnamese tradition (Interbeing), as well as members who do not belong to any of the groups and are individual Buddhists or people interested in Buddhism. There is an active membership of just over 40 and around 120 who come to the centre frequently and are subscribers to our quarterly journal. The association is democratic and participatory and elects an administrative council every three years. Monks, nuns and lay teachers are being invited thoughout the year.

Besides meditation evenings and weekend meditation courses the association offers lectures and study groups and a slowly expanding library. There is active participation in interfaith dialogue in town and country and as a logical consequence of the transtraditional structure of the association, there is a strong interest in inter-Buddhist dialogue. The association is also host to the Austrian Institute for In-service Teachers Training (BRPI), who hold seminars for the instructors of Buddhist Religion at Austrian schools on the premises.

One of the chief areas of interest in EBU is to get into contact and cooperation with other transtraditional centres and inter-Buddhist dialogue groups in Europe, engaging in an exchange of opinion and experience.
