Reiyukai

The Reiyukai movement (literally “association of spiritual friendship”) is a lay Buddhist practice based on the teachings of the Threefold Lotus Sutra. It encourages all individuals to improve their lives and try to attain enlightenment through their own will and efforts, without withdrawing from active participation in society. Reiyukai believes that such motivated people working together will inevitably help to establish a better society in which peace and spiritual harmony will reign.

The fundamental philosophy of Reiyukai is that people should endeavour to follow the bodhisattva path, developing their inner self by emulating the bodhisattvas and doing the practices described in the Lotus Sutra.

The basic concept on which this bodhisattva path lies is that people should always try to view their immediate situation in the context of “dependent origination”. Reiyukai posits that an effective way to do so is through a process of positive interpersonal exchange among family members, friends, and acquaintances in the field of our daily life, and a personal relationship with one’s own ancestors.

The main practices advocated by the Reiyukai are the recitation of the Sutra and the bodhisattva practices, carried out with the earnest search for enlightenment both for oneself and others, including the practice of letting people know about the existence and the value of the Dharma, of sharing it with them and of encouraging them on the path.

By trying to share the teachings with others, one comes to understand the Sutra more deeply. In addition, it forces one to confront the intricacies and difficulties of communicating with others and developing relationships of trust and sincerity.

Recitation allows one to interiorize the teachings of the Lotus Sutra and, as a kind of meditation, to gain a heightened intuition and awareness about oneself and one’s relations with others. This recitation is also a practice designed to enrich our appreciation of life through understanding more deeply the connection that we have with our ancestors.
